Changes in Plasma and Extracellular Fluid Volumes in Patients with Essential Hypertension During Long-Term Treatment with Hydrochlorothiazide
ثبت نشده
چکیده
In 13 untreated patients with essential hypertension, the plasma volume (T-1824) and the extracellular fluid volume (82Brdistribution space) were determined three times. During treatment with 50 to 100 mg of hydrochlorothiazide daily, determinations of plasma volume and extracellular fluid volume were repeated after treatment for 1 mo (13 patients), 2 mo (13 patients), 4 mo (eight patients), and 6 mo ( seven patients). In all cases the average plasma and extracellular fluid volumes were reduced compared with the averages of three control values. The plasma volume was significantly reduced at the 5% level after treatment for 1, 2, and 4 mo. Corresponding studies from the literature have been reviewed and, on the basis of these studies and our own results, it is concluded that thiazides have a volume-depleting effect which is continued during long-term treatment of patients with essential hypertension.

متن کاملEndocrine sodium and volume regulation in familial hyperkalemia with hypertension.
The hormonal regulation of sodium and volume homeostasis was investigated in three patients (two related) with the syndrome of familial hyperkalemic acidosis and hypertension with normal glomerular filtration rate. Recumbent plasma renin activity was low during normal sodium intake (135 mmol daily), and the response to upright posture or to low sodium diet (10 mmol daily) was blunted. Recumbent...
متن کاملHormonal changes with long-term converting-enzyme inhibition by captopril in essential hypertension.
1. Captopril was shown to be as effective as hydrochlorothiazide in lowering the blood pressure in patients with moderately severe essential hypertension. 2. With the combination of captopril and hydrochlorothiazide satisfactory control of blood pressure was maintained over 8 months. 3. Inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme by captopril in man was associated with falls in plasma angiotens...
متن کاملInfluence of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on diuretic treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension.
In an open triple crossover study in 10 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension the influence was investigated of adding indomethacin 50 mg, naproxen 250 mg, or sulindac 200 mg, each twice daily for four weeks, to diuretic treatment with hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg a day. After two weeks' treatment with indomethacin a slight increase in blood pressure was observed, whereas both suli...
